Works by Goichi Mitani

三谷吾一の作品
Influenced by the abstract and poetic colors of Paul Klee, Mitani established a new chinkin expression. In the past, Chinkin, which combines pigments and gold and silver powder with lacquer, such as black and vermillion, had a limited variety of colors compared to Makie. Mitani used platinum foil, ergy powder colored with aluminum powder, titanium oxide and iron oxide to enable fine gradation expression. In addition, new metal powders such as mica-colored pearl powder were incorporated into Chinkin painterly expressions. Over ten years of research, he devised a combination of metal powders and a process of layering line engraving and dot engraving. Attempting bright and soft expressions with rich neutral colors, he developed a unique world unique to Chinkin, which is completely different from oil paintings and prints. The familiar animals and plants, flowers, shellfish, fish, and birds that he saw on Wajima when he was a child are often used as motifs. In the 1980s, his fantastical style emphasized the contrast of bright colors that seemed to emit light from colored metal powder. From the mid-1990s onwards, even within a single color plane, complex layering of colors was expressed through carving. In the latter half of the 2000s, he continued to expand the possibilities of Chinkin by combining the effects of cut foil and lacquer plates. In 2015, he was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit.
